What are we doing now?

While the calendar says it is summer, we have our doubts.  We have been experiencing, what would best be called, spring showers and rain!  We are currently on track for the wettest June on record.  While we welcome Nature to do our watering for us, all this water is beginning to take a toll on our being able to get any real gardening work done.

We have been busy propagating by taking cuttings of our woody's and have thousands of new plants starting to sprout their roots.  Our cuttings from last year, planted out in the field last fall are looking spectacular!  We have been potting up our 2 year old cuttings and taking them to market and are pleased to see that they are selling well.

Our grafted Japanese Maples look GREAT!  The comments from market buyers confirm to us that these young trees are a huge hit.  In particular, the weeping varieties are in much demand.  If you couldn't get one from us this year, don't despair - we will be working on more of those type for next season.  Speaking of Japanese........

We haven't seen the Japanese beetles yet, but we know that they are on their way.  Japanese beetles have a way of devouring the leaves of every beautiful plant they see.  We have decided to attempt to combat them this year by using our small flock of chickens!  Our plan (note the use of the word "plan") is to place Japanese Beetle lures in the chicken run and let the chickens have some tasty summer treats!  We have been watching them grab at any bug that dares to enter their domain, so we have high hopes that when the beetles arrive the chicks will continue their appetite for things that fly.  Updates on that little project to follow.

Who We Are

Crofter's Garden Nursery is owned and operated by Andy Kennedy, originally from Western Scotland.  Andy moved to the United States after marrying the then, Kristin Hunnibell and continued his career as a registered nurse here in the US.  When a work related injury required him to give up his operating room duties, he decided to pursue his passion for gardening.  With help for the heavy work, he has propagated and grown thousands of plants all hardy to the coastal Maine winters we experience.  Andy welcomes inquiries and suggestions from customers who are looking for unusual or special plants.  If we don't have it, chances are, we can find it!

About Our Name - Crofter's Garden

What is a crofter?  A crofter is someone who farms a croft, a small farm generally between two and eight acres and usually in the West of Scotland.  With Andy coming from the West of Scotland, it only seemed appropriate to name our small nursery, The Crofter's Garden Nursery.
