About Crofter's Garden Nursery

Crofter's Garden Nursery is located in the mid-coast region of Maine, just off coastal Route 1, midway between Wiscasset and Rockland.  We are currently growing decorative trees, woody shrubs (including Maine blueberries!) and perennials.

You can visit us during the Farmer's Market season at either the Boothbay Farmer's Market (located at Boothbay Common, Route 27 in Boothbay) on Thursdays from 9am to noon OR the Damariscotta Friday Farmer's Market (located at the Damariscotta River Association Salt Bay Farm - 110 Belvedere Road, Damariscotta) on Fridays from 9am to noon.

You can also visit the nursery in Waldoboro by phoning ahead to (207)832-5700.

What are we doing now?

Summer is definitely over and autumn is here with all of its wonderful colours!  The plants have been slowing losing their leaves and are getting ready for their dormant winter stage.  We are busy with dismantling watering systems, putting plants back in the ground and in general getting the nursery ready for winter.

Our grafted Japanese Maples sold very well this season!  The comments from market buyers confirm to us that these young trees are a huge hit.  In particular, the weeping varieties are in much demand.  If you couldn't get one from us this year, don't despair - we will be working on more of those type for next season.

Our plan this past summer, of combating Japanese Beetles by luring them into our chicken run and providing the chickens with tasty summer treats, worked well.  We actually began taking full traps from other locations on the property and dumping the beetles in a pile in the pen and entertaining ourselves watching the chickens have a field day.  We will most assuredly use a similar plan next season!

We would like to give thanks to all our customers this past summer who helped make our second season such a success.  We have enjoyed meeting all of you and "re-meeting" those we knew from last season.  We look forward to seeing you all again next year!

Who We Are

Crofter's Garden Nursery is owned and operated by Andy Kennedy, originally from Western Scotland.  Andy moved to the United States after marrying the then, Kristin Hunnibell and continued his career as a registered nurse here in the US.  When a work related injury required him to give up his operating room duties, he decided to pursue his passion for gardening.  With help for the heavy work, he has propagated and grown thousands of plants all hardy to the coastal Maine winters we experience.  Andy welcomes inquiries and suggestions from customers who are looking for unusual or special plants.  If we don't have it, chances are, we can find it!

About Our Name - Crofter's Garden

What is a crofter?  A crofter is someone who farms a croft, a small farm generally between two and eight acres and usually in the West of Scotland.  With Andy coming from the West of Scotland, it only seemed appropriate to name our small nursery, The Crofter's Garden Nursery.
